Indians have higher body fat % at the same BMI as Europeans. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommends lower thresholds.
Why Indian BMI Ranges Are Different
Indians and South Asians develop metabolic health risks at lower BMI values compared to Europeans. Studies show that Indians have higher body fat percentage and abdominal fat at the same BMI, putting them at higher risk for diabetes and heart disease. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and WHO recommend using lower thresholds: Normal weight ends at 23 (not 25), and overweight starts at 23 (not 25).
Limitations of BMI: BMI does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. A fit person with high muscle mass may have a high BMI. Always consult a doctor for a complete health assessment.
